Admissions for elementary grades of New York City private schools can be an arduous process. Here is a timeline and things to keep in mind, that will make the application process much more manageable.

If your child is applying for Pre-Kindergarten, she ought to be 4 by September 1st of 2010 and 5  by September 1st of 2010.

The Admissions process begins in April and ends in March. Many schools are ready to accept inquiries for their application packets in May. But you can schedule a tour as early as April. Tours fill up quickly and are usually for parents only. By September, most schools have applications available to send out if you call, or can be downloaded off their website.

Mid-October is the deadline to return your completed application with a standard fee. You have an opportunity to identify desire for financial aid materials on application. After the school receives your application, they will contact you to schedule a playgroup/child visit and possibly your second school tour, which is often led during your child’s playgroup.

Many NYC private schools no longer hold parent interviews and now require an essay that details your interest in the school, and a bio of your child and family.

Dates toDuring the Fall, the, a ERB standardized test is required for those applying for Kindergarten. Financial aid applications are mailed out in November, with a deadline of December 15th. Kindergarten notification is sent out in February and Pre-Kindergarten notification is sent out in March.

Finally! Apply to schools you are truly interested in and imagine will be a good fit for your child. Too many playgroups and visits will have you and your child disillusioned before school begins.
