A large crowd is expected to be on hand tonight in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center as the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) holds its black tie awards gala. The dinner is traditionally the highlight of the Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) and this year’s event promises to be special with the presence of presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and its first to be the presidential standard bearer for a major political party.

The CBCF will bestow its highest honor, the Phoenix Award to Senator Obama and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, New York Governor David A. Paterson, California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass; actress and humanitarian Keri Washington and Eleanor M. Josaitis, co-founder of Focus: HOPE, a civil and human rights organization in Detroit.

“The Phoenix Award recognizes those who through their efforts and accomplishments have made significant contributions to society, and it symbolizes the immortality of the human spirit and an eternal desire to reach its full potential,” said Dr. Elsie L. Scott, Ph.D., president and Chief Executive Officer of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

The dinner attracts a “Who’s Who” of Black politics, entertainment and culture. The evening will kick-off with a Red Carpet arrival of VIPs several hours before the event. The co-hosts for this year’s dinner will be actress Holly Robinson Peete and her husband retired NFL quarterback Rodney Peete. Grammy award winning songstress and music icon Patti LaBelle is expected to perform.
