New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine traveled to the city of Irvington this morning to address the leadership and members of The Civic Group, a civic association serving the community in the greater Newark metropolitan area. His Chief Policy Counsel Michellene Davis accompanied the governor to the meeting. The breakfast meeting, held in the offices of the 6Sixty Group, a communications and political consulting firm in Irvington, took place against the backdrop of the Senate compromise agreement on President Barack Obama’s economic recovery package.

Mr. Corzine met with a large group assembled in a conference room following a brief meeting with several members of the association, during which Commander William Forbes introduced the governor and the president of The Civic Group, attorney Sharifa Salaam, extended a welcome on behalf of the association.

The meeting, closed to the media, focused on several issues of importance to the Black community in the state, including public education, economic development, taxes and workforce development. Governor Corzine arrived at the event prepared also to promote his urban and anti-poverty agenda, as well as to provide reaction to the President’s economic recovery package. Following the meeting, Mr. Corzine sat with NorthStarNews.com Executive Editor to talk about the economic climate and the debate in Washington over the proposed stimulus legislation.
