After submitting your application, you will be notified to come in for a school tour, an interview/playgroup for your child and an interview for both parents. Some schools no longer conduct parent interviews and instead rely on parent essays and meet you as part of your tour group. The parent interviews are usually had with the head of school or the admissions director.

At your scheduled interview, be prepared to talk about your child and your family values, as it pertains to the school’s philosophy. So be sure to do your homework, by getting as much information as you can about each school you apply to. No excuses!

Your interview may open with “Tell me about your child.”

For your child’s interview, dress him neatly and most importantly, comfortably. It may be helpful to keep in mind the dress code of the school, especially if it’s a uniform school, like The Brearley School www.brearley.org, The Chapin School www.chapin.edu, or Convent of the Sacred Heart www.cshnyc.org.

He may be asked to complete specific tasks or take an age appropriate test. A member of the admissions team, who could also be the school’s faculty member, psychologist, social worker, etc, records observations.

Some admissions director, at the end of the interview, may even give feedback about your child. Keep in mind, that if your child has a serious learning issue, this is the perfect time to ask pertinent questions and advocate for your child’s specific needs.

This is NOT the time to offer large donations, which may be seen as bribery and schools value their reputations. Instead, emphasize the strengths of your child and your family
