It’s showtime tonight in Denver as President Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney square off for the first of three debates. Journalist Jim Lehrer will moderate the debate, set for 9 pm from the campus of the University of Denver. Romney has a lot riding on this debate, as all polls indicate him trailing the President in key swing states though USA Today reports that he has closed the gap somewhat in Florida and Virginia. Even Romney’s supporters acknowledge that he must hit all cylinders during these debates if he is to stand a chance come November 6. The President has to avoid appearing defensive over the state of the nation’s economy and be forceful in his rationale for a second term. He must also avoid appearing irritated by his opponent’s characterization of the administration’s record and make sure the Republican leadership of the House (that means Paul Ryan) is part of the narrative of the roadblocks the GOP has deliberately set on Capitol Hill. In many ways, President Obama has the more difficult challenge tonight. After all, he is the President and it can be difficult campaigning aggressively and remaining ‘presidential.” Stay tuned.
